Sample details

Type of sample:
Participants were a mix of first-year psychology students and University of Melbourne community members
Recruitment information:
Participants were a mix of first-year psychology students and University of Melbourne community members, as there were questions regarding group identity to the University of Melbourne. First-year psychology students were recruited through the Research Experience Program of the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences, which reimburses participants with course credit. Other university community members were recruited through university staff mailing lists and university social media groups. Community participants completed an initial screening survey to determine eligibility.
Incentives:
First-year psychology student participants received up to three course credits for their participation, contingent on survey completion. Participants recruited from the university community received up to $65 AUD in online gift cards for completion of baseline and ESM surveys, contingent upon survey compliance. 1. Baseline survey @ 45 minutes $15 / 0.5 credits 2. ESM surveys: - 81% and above completion $50 / 2.5 credits - 61-80% completion $40 / 2 credits - 41-60% completion $30 / 1.5 credits - 21-40% completion $20 / 1 credit - 10-20% completion $10 / 0.5 credits - 10% and below completion $0 / 0 credits
Exclusions:
23 participants were excluded in line with pre-registered criteria. Of these, nine were excluded for failing two attention checks in the baseline survey, three were deemed ineligible after completing the baseline, one experienced technical difficulties and could not complete the study, six did not complete any ESM surveys, and four voluntarily withdrew from the study. After these exclusions, the final sample size was 239 participants.
Number of participants:
239
