Depositing data

Why deposit your data?

Benefits for the field

Experience sampling data allows researchers to map psychological dynamics across diverse everyday contexts, giving us insights into life outside the lab. But these data are costly to collect in terms of both time and money. As such, it is ideal to be able to get the most out of an experience sampling dataset by returning to it with new research questions. This potential is multiplied when we have access to a large number of datasets in which to replicate our analyses. Sharing your data ensures that researchers get the maximum use out of these data, increasing its contribution to scientific knowledge and benefitting the scientific community at large. By adding your data to EMOTE, you will become part of a worldwide network of researchers contributing to open and rigorous science.

Benefits for you

Data owners have the option to include a citation to a key publication using the data, which potential data users will be instructed to cite when using the data for publications, presentations, or other media. Data owners will also be provided with metrics on how many times their data has been requested to demonstrate impact. These metrics are available on the page for your dataset. In addition, if they choose to do so, data owners will be able to vet and approve requests to use their data.

*Please note that the EMOTE upload feature is still under active development. This document will be updated to reflect any changes.

How can you deposit your data?

01

De-identify your data

Please follow these four steps to make sure you have removed all identifying information about participants:

  1. Remove any specific identifying information (e.g., email addresses, IP addresses, names, ID numbers from data collection platforms)
  2. Omit any demographic information that is very specific (e.g., a specific job title) and enduring (is stable across time), or recode these variables to make them more abstract
  3. Review any open-text of strong variables to ensure that participants have not accidentally included identifying information in these fields. Remove any potentially identifying responses or variables or recode these variables into more abstract categories.
  4. Review whether someone could slice across all the demographic variables available to identify a participant. Remove any variables that are part of potential concern, or specific answers that might identify participants.

To begin:

  1. Before uploading data, you'll need to create an account. To do this, you'll need an ORCID ID: if you don't have one already, you can easily create one at this link.
  2. Click on this link to start the upload process. Here you'll be provided with more information about how to prepare your data for upload.
  3. Please read the requirements for EMOTE data on that page, and then select 'Continue to data deposit process'.
  4. Read our Privacy Collection Notice about uploading data and confirm that your data meets the requirements and Terms & Conditions.
  5. Please ensure that your dataset is fully de-identified before uploading to EMOTE.
03

Upload your data:

  1. Fill out the Data Deposit Form with your contact details and details about the dataset. Please provide enough information here so the dataset is understandable. *Note: Please ensure that you have logged into your EMOTE account before you commence the Data Deposit Form.
  2. Once you have completed this form, and have agreed to the Terms & Conditions, click 'Submit'. You will then be directed to upload your dataset.
04

Provide us with more information about your data:

  1. Once you have uploaded your data to EMOTE, we'll email you the Variable Information Template. In this template you'll provide us more with more detail about each of the variables in the dataset.
  2. At this stage you'll have the option to exclude additional variables from the dataset. This feature is useful for removing things like system variables that other users will not need.
  3. Please note that completing the Variable Information Template may take some time. Based on our piloting, depending on the size and complexity of your dataset this process may take anywhere from 3 and 8 hours to complete fully. The Variable Information Template is automatically saved so you are welcome to work on this template at your own pace and return to this document at any time.
05

Review your dataset:

  1. Once you have completed the Variable Information Template, you'll have the opportunity to check that you have entered all the information correctly. The email where you are provided access to the template will also detail these steps below.
  2. To ensure you have filled out all the required columns, click on your username at the top right-hand page of EMOTE. Then select "Manage requests and uploads" then select your dataset name under 'Your data uploads'.
  3. From this upload page you will be able to access the 'Metadata review page' which will outline if you have missed any required columns in the Variable Information template, and you'll be able to go back and make any additions or changes. This will also outline if you have any duplicate variable names. Please ensure that each variable name is unique. However, variable names can be the same as long as these have different assessment types for each variable (e.g ESM and Baseline)
06

Import your dataset to EMOTE:

  1. When your dataset has met all our requirements a "Submit" button will appear on the "Metadata review page".
  2. Click "Submit" and our research team will then make your dataset public.
